Gwernyfed High School has become one of the latest schools in Wales to sign up to the 5x60 Programme.
The 5x60 Programme is a new initiative introduced by the Sports Council for Wales in association with the Welsh Assembly Government. The aim of the programme is to encourage secondary school pupils in Wales to take part in 60 minutes of extracurricular activity 5 times a week.
The ethos of the programme is for children to have fun whilst trying a new activity, learning a new skill or simply taking part in the sports they already enjoy.
Physical Activity can take any form – walking with a group of friends, canoeing on the river, playing in a 5-a-side football league, or joining a street-dancing club.
The 5x60 Programme also offers opportunities for older pupils, parents and people in the community to get involved. Volunteers will be needed to supervise sessions, assist in running clubs or events and accompany groups to off-site activities. You don’t have to be sports orientated, just willing to spare some time to help out.
By 2009 every secondary school in Wales will have their own 5x60 Officer. The officer’s role is to consult with pupils and develop a programme of activities to take place outside of school hours – this may be before school, at lunchtime, after school, or at weekends. The whole programme is pupil-centred so cannot work without their involvement.
